The SJD was offered at the Melbourne Law School from 1994 to 2008. SJD candidates took four courses from the LLM by coursework programme and had to achieve excellent results in those courses. They then completed an 80,000 word thesis which was examined by external examiners in a similar manner to the PhD. The SJD was a doctoral level qualification and some outstanding students completed the degree. People who completed this degree are entitled to call themselves Dr. Changes to the University management of research degrees and to the support given to PhD students led to the decision to abolish the SJD in 2008. SJD holders remain valued members of the Melbourne Law School community and their degree still represents a significant and substantial research qualification.
