Research Support Funds

This scheme is open to academic staff and graduate research students for a range of research-related purposes including costs associated with attendance at conferences, travel in support of research projects, and other expenses directly related to the costs of undertaking research work.

Melbourne Law School Small Grants Scheme

This scheme aims to assist and encourage academic staff to further their research careers by funding, on a competitive basis, high quality research projects where funding is not available from other sources.

International Research Visitors Scheme

This scheme is designed to enhance collaborative work between international researchers and members of the Melbourne Law School.  Funding is made available for academics from outside Australia to spend between six weeks and three months working on a research project with one or more members of staff.

This scheme is designed to support collaborative research projects with overseas and Australian research partners, leading to research of high quality and impact; facilitate the development and enhancement of research and research training linkages; and lay the basis for joint funding proposals to granting bodies, government or industry for larger, longer-term projects.

Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grants Scheme (ECR)

This scheme provides funding to support early career researchers who demonstrate clear evidence of high research potential to further their research careers by funding on a competitive basis high quality research projects and pilot research projects.

Melbourne Research Fellowships (Career Interruptions) Program

This program provides a research fellowship to eligible researchers to enhance or re-establish their academic research careers where their careers have been severely interrupted, delayed or otherwise constrained by chronic illness, child bearing, child rearing or primary responsibility for the sustained care of a dependant family member.

Staff Equity Research Fellowships Program

This program provides a research fellowship to assist part-time or full-time academic and professional staff complete a doctoral qualification, when progress towards completion has been interrupted or impeded as a result of circumstances such as significant family or carer responsibilities, disability or serious medical condition, or racial or cultural background.

Applicants for this scheme are by invitation from the Deputy Vice-Principal (Research).  The scheme provides funding for researchers competing for external grants to support high quality research activities.

This scheme provides internal seed funding to support major new cross disciplinary (and often cross-department or cross-faculty) strategic research initiatives.

Visiting Scholar Awards

These awards are designed to assist researchers from leading overseas universities / research insititutions to visit The University of Melbourne for periods of two to six months to engage in collaborative research.

Grant for Preparing Major Research Proposals (MGPSS)

This scheme provides funding to support the preparation of 'major' external research funding proposals (that is, grants, including centre proposals, valued at $1 million or more).

Grant Preparation Support Scheme (GPSS)

These small grants are designed to assist researchers to prepare applications for external research funding that involve two or more institutions or extensive University collaboration with industry.

Melbourne Strategic Research Initatives Fund (SRIF) (external)

This scheme provides funding to support a major research bid to an external body (where a cash contribution from the University is a pre-condition of the application).

This scheme provides funding for research projects that can be undertaken by individual researchers or research teams.  The scheme also incorporates a range of fellowships from postdoctoral to professorial levels.

Federation Fellowships (FF)

Federation Fellowships are highly prestigious awards designed to attract to Australia and retain outstanding researchers, build and strengthen Australia's world-class research capacity, support ground-breaking internationally competitive research, and develop strong links among researchers, industry and the international research community.

Linkage Projects (LP)

This scheme supports collaborative research and development projects between higher education organisations and other organisations, including industry, to enable the application of advanced knowledge to problems.  Typically, research projects funded under the scheme involve risk.

Linkage Infrastructure (Equipment and Facilities) (LIEF)

The LIEF scheme provides funding for large-scale coooperative initiatives so that expensive infrastructure, equipment and facilities can be shared by researchers in partnered organisations with the aim of promoting collaboration.

Linkage Social Sciences Collaboration

This scheme encourages networks and collaborations between researchers, research teams and research centres of excellence in Australia and overseas.  Awardees may participate in national and international exchanges between research organisations.

The ARC provides salary and associated funding to outstanding research fellows to work in eligible Australian or overseas organisations.  Fellowships may either be awarded to fund Australia-based researchers to work in overseas research organisations, or to fund overseas researchers to work in Australia.
